Model-Based Systems Engineering as Enabler to Build Bridges between Engineering Disciplines at ABB Smart Power
Challenges such as increased product complexity and shorter development times force ABB to build bridges between engineering departments with conflicting design goals and foster intense collaboration.
To transform their current way of working, ABB Smart Power defined a vision of the future Digital Thread that impacts all engineering departments. To achieve common goals in implementing the Digital Thread, a key point is to enable collaboration based on Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE). Transitioning from a document-centric to a model-based approach involve various challenges that require effective change management.
The presentation will give an overview on ABB’s vision for Systems Engineering and specific challenges in building bridges between engineering disciplines, e.g. diverse development processes and tools, missing systems thinking and collaborating across work cultures. Different exemplary measures to set the foundation for a solid deployment of MBSE at ABB Smart Power will be presented. A focus will be set on the involvement of all stakeholders impacted by the introduction of MBSE to bring the different design teams closer together.
