Systems Engineering Meets Transformation: Lessons Learned and Hidden Success Factors
This contribution explores how organizations can successfully transform their Systems Engineering (SE) processes and methods by leveraging both established engineering thinking and transformation-specific capabilities. The work is based on insights from a structured workshop with experienced Systems Engineers, capturing their perspectives on what works well in practice and where typical challenges arise.
The findings strongly align with previously identified failure patterns, particularly the “8 rules for total deadlock” described by Prof. Kruse, which were largely confirmed by the practitioners. A key outcome is the recognition that organizational transformation can be approached similarly to the development of complex technical systems: it benefits from structured processes, clear requirements, iterative refinement, and system-level thinking.
However, an important gap emerged. Critical transformation enablers, such as values, cultural aspects, and holistic business thinking, were largely absent from the Systems Engineers’ responses. This suggests that while Systems Engineers bring valuable methodological strengths, successful transformation requires additional competencies beyond traditional SE practice.
The presentation concludes with practical “life hacks” and actionable approaches that bridge this gap, highlighting essential success factors for driving sustainable change in SE-driven organizations.

Maren holds a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, specialising in Product Development (Technical University of Hamburg) and is a Certified Systems Engineer Level B (GfSE). She is also a trained Systemic Change Manager and holds a number of other certifications, including SAFe Agilist and Certified Scrum Master (CSM).
She began her career as a technical designer in forklift hydraulics before working as a systems engineer for chassis and cab systems. Later, she also took on technical project management in the pre-development phase, where she focused on variant and cost optimisation as well as the development of a new product generation of forklifts and drove the piloting of new technologies. She also gained international experience as a research assistant at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon in the field of micro-manufacturing.
Maren currently works as a freelance systemic consultant and systems engineering trainer in Hamburg. She is a highly skilled and experienced professional who combines technical expertise with a deep understanding of systems thinking and a holistic approach. She is dedicated to supporting and enabling companies to fully leverage the potential of systems engineering to meet future challenges.
