Architecting the Change: Experiencing Enterprise Transformation with UAF in a Non-Deterministic World
Enterprise, business, and digital transformation remain central to strategic initiatives. Yet many efforts struggle as plans collide with evolving conditions, interdependencies, and uncertainty. Traditional, document-based approaches often assume stability that no longer exists.
This presentation explores how a model-based approach to Enterprise Architecture can bring precision to transformation planning in the face of non-deterministic behavior. Rather than treating transformation as a linear progression, the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) enables continuous alignment between intent and implementation as systems, resources, and constraints evolve.
Through the illustrative case of the Elm Springs Bus initiative to transform a city bus system from hybrid buses to fully electric, we demonstrate how UAF 1.2 can be applied in enterprise transformation planning. This sample case study showcases how UAF helps identify required resources and infrastructure changes, integrates capability planning with project timelines, resource allocation, and system-of-systems architecture—ensuring that capability gaps are avoided and deployment proceeds smoothly.
As Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) continues to expand into enterprise architecture and mission planning, this presentation proposes a structured, model-driven methodology for transformation planning. Attendees will gain insights into using UAF to align enterprise capabilities, ongoing projects, and essential resources—illustrating how MBSE can truly support enterprise change, not just document it.

Edita has a master’s degree from Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania), and is INCOSE Certified ASEP, OMG Certified UML, Systems Modeling, and Business Process Management professional.
Tobias Kaiser works as an Industry Process Specialist of the CATIA Magic Cyber Systems team for Dassault Systèmes. He holds a bachelor‘s degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master’s degree in Systems Engineering, and a SysML Model User OMG certification. The main focus of his work includes system architecture, MBSE application, and, more recently, enterprise architecture - especially using UAF. He is a member of the GfSE SE pain points working group and the GfSE UAF working group.
