Model-Based Product Line Engineering: The Feature-Based PathTo Product Lines Success

The development of safety-critical and software-defined systems is increasingly challenged by rising complexity and variability, which often exceed the cognitive limits of human engineers and the capabilities of traditional development methods. This presentation introduces Model-Based Product Line Engineering (MBPLE) as a discipline designed to address these dual pressures through a structured, model-centric approach to product line development. It highlights the limitations of widespread practices such as clone-and-own and applicability matrices which inhibit scalability, traceability, and reuse. The MBPLE Adoption Quadrant is presented as a practical planning "tool" to help organizations assess their current position and define their trajectory toward effective MBPLE implementation. Real Stories from the author's experience illustrate the approach and its adoption in practice.
